Women's Human Rights Defender

Location: Serbia

WHO: Ljiljana Nesic, women human rights defender

WHAT: Nesic supports women who have been subjected to violence and works with demanding responsibility for crimes that were committed during the war. Nesic has been working for the organization, Women for Peace, established in 2007. Women for Peace works to build new relationships with Kosovo-Albanians. It is also part of the Women in Black-network working against militarism and nationalism. Women for Peace operates an emergency phone service for women who experience violence, and provide legal, medical and psychosocial support for the same group of women. They inform women about their human rights, and encourage young women to take active part in public life.

IN HER OWN WORDS: “For me as a woman, for all women, it is important that women can be their own persons. They shouldn’t suppress things that others don’t agree with or be only what society expects them to be. I would like to let women know that there are no problems that a woman can’t solve. That was the most important thing for me, to become aware of what I want to be and who I really am.

When I was younger I knew something was very wrong, but I couldn’t put my finger on what it was. Only when I met women that shared the same values I felt good, free to take to the streets and express what I didn’t agree with. In women’s groups I could share my opinions freely.”
