Those in power are afraid of us

Location: Uvira in eastern DR Congo

WHO: Katana is the leader of The Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation’s partner organisation SOFAD (Solidarité des Femmes Activistes pour la Défense des Droits Humains), whose goal is to get more women included in the decision-making in villages and cities. A controversial issue in a society where a woman is not seen as having the right to speak up against a man, where women do not inherit their fathers and where violence against women is a major problem, not least in the homes. The threats against her have been numerous and she has both been arrested and forced into exile. She says, “I still receive threats and there are places where I can not go, but there are so many people supporting me that I can not stop.”

IN HER OWN WORDS: “Those in power are afraid of us. They understand that we are a force to be reckoned with. Today, when SOFAD arranges large meetings both the police, the military and politicians want to participate. They understand that they need to be seen with us, show that they are with us.”
