WHO: Buthainah Mahmood

WHAT: Buthainah Mahmood is a women’s human rights defender and a displaced person living in Iraqi Kurdistan today. Mahmood founded Hawa Organization for Relief and Development, which initially provided humanitarian aid to women affected by the war. Since January 2014, The Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation has supported the Hawa Organizaiton to run a center in Moqtadiya, where women victims of violence receive counseling and legal assistance. This has been a safe place for women in Moqtadiya and surrounding villages, until ISIL took control of Mosul, the second largest city in Iraq.

IN HER OWN WORDS: “There is no justice to be found in Iraq today, but we must continue to work for the days that will come. Maybe our sons and daughters will have a better future.”
